An Employer's View of Health and Safety

As an employer, it is vital that you look after your employees and protect them from any danger. There is various health and safety legislation that employers must adhere to, which are in place to make sure that workers are always safe and able to carry out their tasks without fear of injury. However there are other reasons apart from legislation, as to why it is in the employer's interest to follow health and safety procedures.

Across the world, there are different health and safety acts that have been put in place to protect employees. If employers fail to follow these procedures set out by the legal system, they could be penalised heavily and face some sort of prosecution. In some cases this can lead to heavy compensation settlements. Therefore, it is important from a financial viewpoint that the company adheres to the laws to avoid situations like this.

In addition, if employees become injured, not only will the company lose money through compensation, they will have to look to re-hire and retrain new employees, which is a costly process.

The hiring process will require advertising for new employees or hiring an agency which will request a fee. Training the employees will also take time and effort to get them up to the standard of previous employees.

In terms of productivity, it is important that workers do not fear for their safety in the workplace. If this is the case, employees are more productive and will be able to concentrate fully on their tasks. If they feel that an employer is cutting corners to save funds, this will not only make the workers feel at risk, they will also feel less affection towards the company and are likely to be less productive.
It is important to create a strong relationship with an employee, that is based on trust and loyalty, and ensuring their safety is just one of the aspects.

In the past, there were no health and safety rules to follow and companies were not held responsible for workplace accidents and injuries, which is clearly wrong. Nowadays, legislation has been put in place to protect employees and to make employers more accountable for what happens in the work environment. It is vital that employers follow these rules, not only to protect their employees but to protect their company. Health and safety provides a backbone for the company and should never be overlooked as meaningless regulations that are being enforced by the government.
